5 Ways to Get Your Porch Ready for Spring
Spring is just about here, but that doesn't mean you're out of time to spruce up your outdoor living space. Try these 5 easy ways to get your porch ready just in time to enjoy the changing weather.
1. Repurpose unused furniture
If you don't already, make sure you have some comfortable seating so you can sit outside and enjoy the spring weather. If you have any old or unused furniture around the house, take advantage of this budget-friendly alternative to buying high-priced patio furniture. Have an old daybed, maybe some chairs or a loveseat you never got around to recovering? Take these out to your porch to use for a sitting area. If you aren't in love with the fabric choice, use a solid colored sheet to tuck around the cushions and throw some comfy pillows that match your decor to give it that finished look. Don't forget, other pieces such as an old trunk can work great as a coffee table for the space as well. If you don't have any spare furniture lying around, try checking out some local yard sales, thrift stores, or second-hand shops for some great pieces that are also cost-saving.
2. Add a touch of color
Adding potted plants and greenery is one of the simplest ways to refresh your outdoor space. Plants can be purchased at a variety of prices, so make sure to look around for the best deal. Try using some unused planters you may have sitting around, or check out thrift stores and such for these as well. New small planters can usually be found relatively inexpensively as well.
3. Let there be light
Lighting is a key element of a porch, whether ambient or not. You want your porch or outdoor living area to be an extension of your home, a place you can sit and enjoy many of the same things you would indoors. For example, if you like to sit and read in the evening, you'll want to make sure you have enough light to do so. Lighting fixtures such as used floor lamps or table lamps can be found at flea markets, thrift shops, and resale stores. You might even consider painting a fixture to get the look you want. String lights provide a wonderful ambiance after dark as well. Candles (usually flameless ones for safety) are another great potential source of light.
4. Rugs aren't just for the indoors
Try a patterned rug layered on the floor of your sitting area. An outdoor rug can help to unify the furnishings and color scheme, while adding a layer of texture and warmth to the space. This might be a piece you want to purchase new, since dirt and wear can show up over time.
5. Bring indoor decor layers outside
Make your porch really feel like a comfortable sitting spot with layers of indoor decor. Gather some items such as unused decorative pillows, wall decor, decorative trays, or accessories you'd find on end tables around your home and bring them outside. You can find similar items at flea markets, thrift stores, or garage sales. Look for vases, bookends, and colorful cushion seats to bring style and energy to your spring porch.
Nothing makes your outdoor living area feel quite like an extension of the interior of your home like a screened porch. Interested in enclosing your outdoor living area this Spring? Call Northern Craft Construction for an in-home 3-D Design and estimate.
